I have seen some great examples of in and out sliding maps. Would it be possible to have a map fade-out during click&drag and fade-in again when the mousebutton is released? And would such an action have an impact on the smoothness of the moving panorama?

Yes, you could do that with onPress and onRelease...

And yes it would have some impact on the smoothness of the panorama. Now the question is would the impact cause a noticeable difference? I don't know. You'd have to try it. And report back.

Sounds like it could be a nice effect. I'd love to see it.

It's also very likely that a moving panorama is going to have an effect on the smoothness of fade-out/fade-in.

See example of sliding things at my main site -- when panoramas are in auto-presentation mode, you can see a noticeable difference in the movement of the sliding panes.
