View Full Version : How do I call FPP without swfobject

I am using a very robust 3rd party JS which detects all plugins and it seems incompatible with swfobject.js (2.2) and FPP on IE7 & IE8 (works on FF). If I move the order that the links to the 2 js are called, the symptoms change and if I eliminate my full plugin detector and use only swfobject.js alone it works.
I am looking for a simple solution to this problem still using my all-plugin detector and without going through a long debug and involving authors of these 2 js programs (if possible).
Question:
Since I already know what version of Flash I have, what would be a suitable way to call FPP without swfobject?
Thanks!

Detecting different plugins and directing people to different viewers is today just a stupid idea which only gives you problems. No normal visitors will care what viewer you use.
The only thing you get is less viewers as the detection will not work.
Forget about it and use the standard swobject to show just Flash panoramas.
Do you see the "select plugin" options any more on the large news-pages. No it is gone and you have to accept that flash is what is used today and as it gives you much more possibilities than other viewers use these options instead to give the visitors an exceptional experience.

I was just selecting the best player behind the scenes for what they had installed, knowing that the chances of them installing a player just to view my pano (and if they hadn't up to now) was not a large possibility (coupled with the fact that I really want them to view the pano).
So you think a install flash now or not see my pano philosophy is best then?
Curious on this - Thanks!

I think Adobe has oversold the web on the Flash idea. Their marketing seems based on the thought that everyone has a computer purchased in the past 3 years, has tons of memory and linked with fast broadband. That is not what I have found. I found this out recently when my photo host changed the slide show from HTML to Flash; I lost about 40% of my audience due to performance on old systems and slow Internet connections. They just couldn't display the Flash slideshow. The same goes for customers. I recently secured a job, took all the shots and put it all together only to find the customer could not even display a 1M old style Flash image on a 5 year old system on a satellite link. So there are those people with the older technology and slow connections that I have to make happy, as well as those who love the FPP with today's modern equipment.
So, what I wish to do with the plugin detector is look at the plug-ins they have installed and display the pano with whatever software they have installed already. I figure if they don't have flash installed yet in this age, it should not be up to me to force the issue, especially if there is an alternate software installed that works for them.
So based on this, do you have another idea for displaying the flash image other than swfobject. I appreciate your help! Thanks!
